‘The Dogs of Riga’ by Henning Mankell (Vintage 2004)

Very disappointed with this. Was an avid follower of the ‘Wallander’ series of Swedish detective stories on TV, especially when Kurt Wallander, the personally-troubled police detective, was played by Krister Henrikson. This book goes stale about half-way through when the writing seems to go on automatic pilot. Disciplined prig as I am, even I couldn’t plough on to the end. ‘Mankell is in the first division of crime writing’ says the Times (on the front cover). Maybe, but this book isn’t. (Anyway, isn’t there a Premier Division?)
